Kenosha, WI – May 22, 2018 – This past Saturday, the Boys & Girls Club of Kenosha hosted its first Young Ladies Empowerment Conference, Own Your Journey. The conference welcomed young ladies in grades 6th – 12th and their parents. This event was made possible by the AMB Foundation and Franks Diner.
Own Your Journey featured breakout sessions for both young ladies and parents. Sessions focused on self-worth and self-esteem. For parents, presentations covered the cost of juvenile delinquency and tools to empower teens. Group leaders were professionals from Carthage College, Kenosha County, Recovery International and the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction.
Dionna Gavin, Manager of Organizational Development at Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin, was the keynote speaker. Gavin grew up in a single parent home in the inner city, and became the first person in her family to earn both a Bachelors and Masters Degree.
“There isn’t enough messaging out there about why you should be yourself and focus on self-worth,” said Gavin. “It was important for me to come today because doing so aligns with my values of inspiring people, serving God and providing tools and resources to individuals. I hope this conference has encouraged young girls to rise above their own limitations.”
